Two years ago, my husband got hospitalized due to gout. He’s only on his early thirties yet his gout attack episodes were so bad that he literally cannot stand or move for weeks. This was an eye opener for our growing family to #BeHealthyInsideAndOut.
For moms (and dads) who like me strive to live healthily with their families, here are a few tips that we started picking up:
Start a Healthy Diet / Lifestyle
Our pedia once told us, our kids only get to eat what we buy/serve them. True enough, if our grocery cart is full of chips and chocolates most likely that’ll what the kids will have for snacks.
We begin doing our weekly palengke trips so we can stock up on fresh produce, fruits and vegetables. This made up our menu for the whole week.
I work odd hours in a BPO so coffee is life for me. However, I’ve noticed that whenever I’ve had coffee (specially if taken later in the day), I’ll have a hard time sleeping at home.
I recently switched to herbal teas at the office. A much healthier alternative that still gives me my caffeine fix but lets me sleep soundly at night.

One of the issues with drinking coffee, especially if taken later in the day, is that you’ll have trouble sleeping. Yung tipong makakatapos ka na ng isang season ng Kdrama pero gising na gising ka pa din. Lack of sleep affects our over-all health and can make us prone to sickness. And pag nanay ka, bawal magkasakit! Limit Social Media and Smart Phones
Kids nowadays are fixated on their smartphones and mobile devices. We see to it that the kids still have active playtime, whenever possible. An hour or so of running around the playground can do wonders on their well being and even social skills.

Manage Stress and Get Help (If Needed)
The first step is to identify your stressors (the things that causes you stress the most) and then find ways on how to manage them.
Unrealistic workload? Talk to your boss and set expectations on deadlines. Toxic friends? Learn to let go of nega friends.
One thing that I’ve learned (and I wished I knew sooner) is to pick your battles. You don’t need to react to everything, all the time. Learning how to let go of things that doesn’t add value to your being actually lets you become a better person.
Lastly, it’s never a sign of weakness to ask/get help when you need it. It could be as simple as a conversation with your trusted friend to getting yourself checked with a professional.
Much as we try, our family’s wellness journey is far from perfect. We have full time jobs and no household help so anything convenient and not time consuming works for us most of the time. We still eat processed food and take outs from time to time. I guess what’s important is taking the first steps and realizing that we’d need to take care of our family’s health.
